Psychiatric Assessment
and Diagnosis
What Does the Treatment and Assessment Process Look Like?
Assessment with a Psychiatrist
Clinical interview
The psychiatrist will conduct a thorough clinical interview with you and your family members to gather information about the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and family history.
Rating scales
The psychiatrist may use standardised rating scales to assess the severity of the patient’s symptoms and to track their progress over time.
Physical exam
The psychiatrist may perform a physical exam or collect information from your GP to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could be causing your symptoms.
Risk assessment
Comorbid conditions, substance use, medical or surgical conditions and their impact
Diagnostic criteria
The psychiatrist will use the diagnostic criteria outlined in the DSM-5 to determine if you meet the criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD.
Differential diagnosis
The psychiatrist will rule out other conditions that can mimic the symptoms of ADHD, such as anxiety disorders, depression, and learning disabilities.
Treatment planning
Based on the results of the assessment, the psychiatrist will develop a treatment plan that may include medication, behavioral therapy, and/or accommodations at school or work. Shared care approach with your trusted GP.
